  • Why does Golden State publish an ADU glossary?

    ADU vocabulary is overloaded with terms that mean different things in different cities. "FAR" in Seattle is calculated differently than "lot coverage" in Bellevue. "DADU," "backyard cottage," and "granny flat" describe overlapping but not identical concepts. Our glossary uses Washington-specific definitions sourced from RCW, WAC, and AHJ municipal code — so when we say a term, you can confirm what it actually means in your jurisdiction.

  • How are glossary terms sourced?

    Every term cites the controlling document: RCW (state statute), WAC (state regulation), city municipal code (linked to the actual section), or industry standard (IBC, IECC, ANSI A117.1). When sources conflict — a city definition differs from state preemption — we explain the conflict and which controls under HB 1337/RCW 36.70A.681.

  • How often is the glossary updated?

    Quarterly review, plus immediate updates when a controlling statute or code changes. Major refresh after each Washington legislative session (typically May–June) because ADU statute moves nearly every session. Each term shows its last-updated date.

  • Can I suggest a term to add?

  • Why not just link to Wikipedia?

    Wikipedia is excellent for general definitions but does not stay current on Washington-specific code minutiae. "Detached ADU" on Wikipedia is a generic definition; on our glossary it includes the statewide minimum allowable size, height cap, and parking exemption under HB 1337 — the details that change whether your project pencils.
