JADU (Junior ADU)

Also known as: Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit

A small interior ADU under 500 sq ft created within the primary home's existing footprint.

DEFINITION

A Junior ADU (JADU) is a smaller class of attached ADU — typically capped at 500 sq ft — created by reconfiguring rooms inside the primary home. JADUs may share a bathroom with the main residence in some jurisdictions, which makes them the cheapest path to a second unit. Washington's HB 1337 explicitly authorizes JADUs, and several cities (Bellevue, Kirkland) treat them as a fast-track permit lane separate from full AADU review.
